The other day, Cameron Hobel of Hobel Wine Works came in for an appointment we’d been long anticipating: he was sharing the newly released 2011 vintage Hobel Cabernet Sauvignon, as crafted by his friend and ours, winemaker Thomas Brown.

The owner's family surname, Hobel, translates to woodworking plane; one that a craftsman uses to smooth, balance and finish wood.  When Cameron Hobel's love of wine took him on different paths throughout the world, he encountered Thomas Brown on a stretch near us and one thing led to another resulting in a partnership with the common theme of fine wine.  We are pretty sure that the meaning of his name speaks of the wine, too.  At the risk of sounding clichéd, the wine is brilliantly smooth and balanced offering up the best of what the soils bring to the Cabernet grape.  At the base of Diamond Mountain (called "Diamond" for the black, shiny obsidian) in the Calistoga AVA is Franz Valley School Road.  Grapes are often bathed in fog in the early mornings and late evenings with lots of sunshine streaming down in the middle of the day resulting in wines rich in flavor with complex tannin structure. Think Levy & McClellan and Harris wines when looking for an association--they are all neighbors of the Engelhard Vineyard, after all.

The structural elements, the framing if we want to continue a wood-working metaphor, are just as solid as they were in the past two vintages. We find the wine to be supported in the overall palate and mouthfeel in terms of a lifted acid profile. This makes sense as it was a cooler growing season, which  has resulted in a new crop of 2011 wines that we surprisingly find so completely compelling! The rich color is beguilingly dark and flat-out gorgeous, like aubergine satin sheets. On the palate, we find bright currant, savory spicy notes, welcome minerality and silky, integrated tannins. To top it off, the gorgeous neck of each bottle is encircled by a slim veneer of Walnut, a further tribute to the name.  237 cases produced, about 100 less than last year, plus 92 points from Galloni.  Basically what we're saying is, if you're a Hobel fan, hop to it before it's sold out!
