In the heart of southern Rhône in the village of Gigondas is Domain du Gour de Chaulé. The Domaine was operated as a bulk wine estate since its establishment in 1900 by Eugene Bonfils, until 1970 when his daughter, Madame Rolande Beaumet, began to bottle small lots of the estate to sell to private clients. Rolande’s daughter, Aline, continued with bottling wine from the estate and expanded it significantly. Today, Domaine du Gour de Chaulé is operated by Eugene’s great-granddaughter Stephanie Fumoso. Believing that Grenache is the heart and soul of Gigondas, Stephanie weaves this philosophy into her wines and vineyard, ensuring 85% of their site is planted to Grenache, the remainder with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault.
Not only is the winery deep rooted with established family ties, but their winemaking traditions are long-lived as well. The vineyard is made up of 23 distinct plots of vines (a key expression of the diversity, complexity and uniqueness to the terroir of Gigondas) and it is aptly named after the Latin term “Juconditas” meaning joy and happiness. With very minimal intervention not only in the vineyard, but the winemaking process as well, the Cuvée Tradition is a true representation of the terroir of the region.
This traditional wine from Gigondas has a deep burgundy color, with rustic and bold aromas of leather, cured meat, black pepper, and dark berries. Full bodied with very firm tannins and balanced acidity, this wine has a bold and long finish with an herbal and peppery aftertaste. A perfect wine for the ski slopes!
