They say every ending is a new beginning...
…This couldn’t be truer for Hobel Wines. 2017 saw the last harvest for The Grain so it was only fitting that a new, equally exceptional source of fruit was sought out. Enter Sodhani Vineyard, a family owned 6.5 acre hillside vineyard tucked against the foothills of Spring Mountain in Saint Helena. Planted in 2000, with clones 7, 15, and 337, each have their own varietal characteristics and are in full maturity producing spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon. An incredibly steep slope demands the vineyard be entirely hand farmed and meticulously hand harvested. What some would consider a challenge, others recognize as a priceless connection to the land.
Before the fires began, 2017 had shaped up to be another great vintage for Napa Valley. The year started with immense winter rains that inundated the valley. However, with this well-draining hillside vineyard, they eased into spring and flowering went smoothly. Hobel harvests a Center-Cut of the Sodhani Vineyard, protected from heat by the afternoon shade created by the surrounding forested hillsides and producing dark fruited Cabernets that have intense but ripe structure. Winemaker, Brown, can be quoted as saying “The wine belies the appellation somewhat, tasting more like a wine from the Oakville hillsides.”
Bright crimson in color this wine jumps from the glass with immense blackberry, blueberry, leather, earth, and pie crust. The palate is chewy and dense with sweet vanilla notes, gardenias, wood spices and coconut. Aged in 100% new French Oak with just 103 cases produced.
