We are very excited to have the newest release Sara Beer's Pilcrow Ghost Block Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon on our shelves here at ACME. An industry veteran who has been under the tutelage of renowned winemakers such as John Williams, Keith Emerson and Jean-Michel Comme, Sara's neo-classical style of wine is graceful and elegant with expressive fruit and structured tannins.
Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from four rows in the Ghost Block Vineyard just north of the town of Yountville. The grapes for this bottling were picked on September 12, 2017 and aged 22 months in French oak using just 25% new barrels. Finishing at a modest 13.8% alcohol by volume, Sara has achieved elegance the hard way, letting the vineyard speak first and acting merely as an interpreter.
If you weren’t already familiar, Ghost Block Vineyard is 16 acres in size and has been farmed by the Hoxsey family for three generations in Yountville, CA. Legend has it, the ghost of the town’s founder George C. Yount, who is buried next to the vineyard, can be seen strolling the vineyard rows and watching over the grapes. A fun story in all, but Ghost Block Vineyard has made its own name, known for the outstanding fruit it produces and the namesake wine that we happily offer every year. The Yountville AVA climate is moderate, with cool marine influence and predictable, morning fog allowing for brisk summer mornings and avoiding extreme heat in most years. This combination helps to give the wine a nervous energy and grace that are highlighted by Pilcrow’s trademark, hands-off winemaking approach leaving the wine more restrained that its predecessor.
Shimmering ruby and violet hues collide in the glass with an intense bouquet of raspberry, currants, rose water and graphite notes. The palate is focused and brimming with black cherry, blackberry, sage, and black tea. A jaunty, exciting Cabernet made whole with soft tannins and a mouth-watering finish. Decant for thirty minutes and enjoy as layers of the historic Ghost Block Vineyard reveal themselves. 175 cases of old-Napa elegance produced.
